The Niger Basin Authority (NBA) was established in Faranah, Guinea in November 1980, with nine (9) member states: Burkina, Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Chad. Its headquarters is in Niamey, Republic of Niger. NBA’s missions are to promote cooperation among member countries and foster integrated growth in the Basin region in all fields by developing its resources, especially in the areas of energy, hydraulics, agriculture, livestock production, fishing, fish farming, sylviculture, forest harvesting, transportation, communication and industry. When the need to reorganize the NBA was identified (so that it could achieve its goals), international donors provided funding for diagnostic and human resources consulting services.
